About Central Michigan University

The University opened its doors in 1892, under the name of Central Michigan Normal School and Business Institute, being renamed in 1895 as Central Michigan Normal School, by the Michigan State Board of Education, which took control over the school in that period. After being renamed several times over the years, the university finally got its current name of Central Michigan University, in 1959, on June 1st.

Today, CMU is known as being a coeducational state university in Mount Pleasant, Michigan, with an enrollment of nearly 28 000 students, of which around 20 000 are undergraduate, placing the university on the 4th place among the largest universities in the state. CMU offers students a total of 27 degrees through 8 academic divisions, as well as numerous Greek fraternities and sororities for them to choose from.

The athletic teams from CMU are known as the Central Michigan Chippewas, who participate in the NCAA Division I-A, as well as in the Mid-American Conference, being best known for their achievements in football, swimming and diving.
